Sailgene Highlights Long-Read Sequencing Solutions at ALAG 2026, Strengthening Ties with the Latin American Genomics Community

Release time:2026-10-28 09:03:43

Sailgene was proud to exhibit at the 20th Latin American Congress of Genetics (ALAG 2026), held October 20–23, 2026, at the Hotel Radisson in Montevideo, Uruguay. Organized by the Asociación Latinoamericana de Genética (ALAG) — a scientific society serving the region's genetics community since 1969 — the congress convened under the theme "Latin America in the Genomic Era: Genetic Diversity, Global Health, and a Sustainable Future."

Under the banner "Impulsando los límites de la tecnología de secuenciación" — pushing the limits of sequencing technology — the Sailgene booth, staffed by Diego Levi, Sailgene's Sales Manager for Latin America, welcomed geneticists, breeders, and biomedical researchers from across South and Central America for four days of scientific exchange. The team presented the company's full service portfolio — from ultra-long-read genome and transcriptome sequencing to full-length amplicon and metagenomics solutions for microbial and environmental research.

Why Latin America's Genomic Diversity Calls for Long Reads

Latin America is home to some of the world's most remarkable genomic diversity — from polyploid crop species and livestock breeds central to regional agriculture to richly diverse wildlife, microbiomes, and human populations with complex admixture histories. Resolving that diversity reliably places heavy demands on sequencing technology: highly repetitive genomes, structural variants, and polyploid chromosome sets are exactly where short reads fall short.

These are the questions long-read sequencing was built to answer. With read N50 exceeding 150 kb, ultra-long Oxford Nanopore reads span the repetitive and structurally complex regions that fragment conventional assemblies, while PacBio HiFi reads deliver the base-level accuracy required for reference-quality, telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genomes.

Conversations at the Booth: From Pangenomes to Direct RNA

Throughout the congress, Diego Levi engaged in one-on-one discussions with researchers working across plant and animal genomics, biodiversity and conservation, population genetics, and human genetics. Recurring themes included:

  • Pangenome and haplotype-resolved assembly for capturing presence/absence variation across cultivars, breeds, and wild relatives — an approach increasingly used to link genetic diversity to agronomic traits.
  • T2T and gap-free genome projects for species with challenging, repeat-rich, or polyploid genomes.
  • Direct RNA sequencing for reading native RNA molecules without reverse transcription or amplification — enabling single-base modification profiling (m6A, m5C, pseudouridine and more), full-length isoform resolution, and poly(A) tail length estimation.

Many visitors were especially interested in how a dual-platform strategy — combining Oxford Nanopore PromethION ultra-long reads with PacBio HiFi accuracy — lets the platform fit the biology of the project rather than the other way around.

Full-Length Amplicon Sequencing: A Workhorse for Microbiome and Biodiversity Research

For many researchers at the congress, the conversation started closer to home: soil, gut, rumen, and environmental microbiome studies remain among the most active genomics applications in Latin America. Sailgene's full-length amplicon sequencing on the Oxford Nanopore platform reads entire 16S rRNA gene and ITS regions in a single pass, delivering species- and strain-level resolution that short amplicon reads cannot reach — while the same environmental portfolio extends from targeted profiling to long-read metagenomics and complete microbial genomes.

A Special Offer for ALAG 2026 Attendees

To mark its participation in ALAG 2026, Sailgene announced a limited-time promotion on amplicon sequencing. For qualifying projects with more than 50 samples, clients can choose one of two options:

  • 6 samples free — six ONT full-length amplicon samples plus analysis, at no charge; or
  • Full-project conversion — the entire project processed as ONT full-length amplicon sequencing at the same price as Illumina short-read amplicon sequencing.

Sample submissions must be received by December 31, 2026. Researchers interested in the offer can reach the Sailgene team through the contact details below.

A Growing Footprint in Latin America

ALAG 2026 marked an important step in Sailgene's expanding engagement with the Latin American research community. As one of the world's largest Nanopore sequencing service providers — operating a fleet of PromethION instruments including the PromethION 48, alongside PacBio and NGS platforms — Sailgene supports researchers worldwide with scalable sequencing capacity, in-house ultra-long DNA extraction protocols, and a published track record of more than 20 high-impact T2T genome studies in the past two years.

The conversations in Montevideo underscored a clear message: regional researchers are ready to move beyond draft genomes toward complete, haplotype-resolved, and multi-omic views of the species that define Latin America's biodiversity, agriculture, and public health.

Looking Ahead

Sailgene thanks the ALAG organizers, the local hosting committee, the invited speakers, and every researcher who stopped by the booth. Building on the connections made in Montevideo, Sailgene looks forward to supporting Latin American genome projects — from biodiversity and conservation genomics to crop improvement and biomedical research — with reliable, high-quality long-read sequencing.
